How to Beat Gohma (Dungeon 6 – The Legend of Zelda NES)

How to Beat Gohma (Dungeon 6 – The Legend of Zelda NES)

After surviving tougher, more aggressive bosses like Gleeok, Dungeon Six offers a bit of relief. Its boss, Gohma, looks intimidating at first—a massive, crab-like monster—but once you understand the gimmick, this fight is over almost as soon as it begins.

This is another classic Zelda lesson: listen to the Old Men.

The Hint You Were Given

Earlier in the dungeon, an Old Man tells you exactly what to do:

“Shoot at the eye of Gohma.”

Unlike many hints in the game, this one is literal—and essential.

Understanding Gohma’s Behavior

Gohma has a very simple attack pattern:

  • He paces back and forth along the top of the room
  • He fires multiple fireballs at Link
  • His eye stays closed most of the time

Gohma cannot be defeated while his eye is closed.

How to Defeat Gohma

Step 1: Equip the Bow and Arrow

This fight cannot be won without arrows.

Make sure you:

  • Have arrows equipped
  • Have at least one arrow in your inventory

Step 2: Defend and Wait

While Gohma moves back and forth:

  • Block fireballs using the Magic Shield
  • Or dodge them entirely by staying mobile

Patience is key here—rushing accomplishes nothing.

Step 3: Shoot the Eye

Eventually, Gohma will:

  • Stop briefly
  • Open his eye

The moment that eye opens:

  • Fire an arrow directly into it

🎯 One clean shot is all it takes.

Gohma instantly collapses, leaving behind a heart.

After the Battle

Once Gohma is defeated:

  • Head north into room A5
  • Collect the Triforce
  • You’ll be fully healed and transported out of the dungeon

Dungeon Six complete.

Why Gohma Exists as a Boss

Gohma reinforces one of The Legend of Zelda’s most important rules:

  • NPC hints matter
  • Items aren’t optional
  • Observation beats trial-and-error

If you ignored the Old Man, this fight could feel impossible. If you listened, it’s one of the easiest bosses in the game.

Final Thoughts

Gohma isn’t a test of skill—it’s a test of attention.

Wait.
Watch.
Shoot.

And always, always listen to the Old Men.
