The group of space explorers land on the planet on the Wii U. The puzzles and exploration of the Pikmin worlds leave you coming back for more of the action. You're in search of fruit to feed your home world. it's intense as you race against your food supply and sun timer to bring back as much food as possible.
Although the Switch release does bring some quality of life improvements over the Wii U release such as the charge function. We still think that Pikmin 3 on the Wii U offers a ton of value and should be experienced for the masses and we've fallen in love with Pikmin 3.
SuperChargers is a family oriented action-RPG that introduces platforming and kart racing ala Mario Kart. Featuring some pretty diverse levels that you can roam around and explore to your hearts content. Yes, it still brings the element of the toy to real life aspect where you can collect the toys that are brought to the game.
The vehicle main missions will have you rushing towards the end of the scene in order to progress. Like dodging volcano erupting platforms or run around playing soccer in an arena. We didn't like having to buy all of the collectable Skylanders toys. You get locked out of the vehicle maps depending on the toy that you collect. Overall, Skylanders SuperChargers is a fantastic experience for the younger audiences.
It's not hard to find games that steal the retro styling, Shovel Knight is retro gaming, done absolutely right. This indie title quickly became one of the best Wii U games without having a physical release at first. Yacht Club takes tons of inspiration from the games of the past and breaths new life into them within Shovel Knight. Take the Knights main attack, the downward shovel that clearly is inspired from the NES classic DuckTales. There's also the main overworld map ala Super Mario Bros. 3 that can clearly be seen.
The levels and bosses are very reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man on the Nintendo and give you that feel of NES hard. The upgrading, navigating throughout the various towns and backtracking are a clear indication of Zelda 2. We had a blast playing through Shovel Knight and believe that anyone looking for a retro game should check out this classic!
Super Mario Maker
Back when 2d Mario games were all the craze in the 80's and 90's, we would always dream about how cool it would be to design your own Mario levels and be able to play them. Well, that's exactly what Super Mario Maker brings to the table. Not only can you make and play your own designed levels, but you can also publish and have the internet enjoy them at their hearts content!
Such a great concept has lead to some fantastic ideas such as music machines, levels where you have to solve puzzles in order to proceed or even Kaizo style Mario levels that are insanely hard to solve. The key to being able to publish a level in Super Mario Maker is you must be able to finish the level yourself before publishing, otherwise you'd have a flurry of levels that are simply too hard.
Mario Kart 8
The first HD Mario Kart game brought to life on the Wii U. Enjoy your favorite kart racing simulation. After the blunder of the Mario Kart Wii, the Wii U brought the killer app you were waiting for. This is one of those releases that was so good, it was bundled (with all of the DLC content) on the Nintendo Switch.
Mario Kart 8 adds combinations of karts and planes along with your main character, varying difficulty levels that you have to unlock while you progress, bright colorful tracks and a fantastic sound track to keep you engaged. We wish the multiplayer mode was a little better similar to the Double Dash or SNES variations as the only downfall.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The Wii U gamepad was a bit of an interesting concept. Not many games knew how to utilize it properly. Deus Ex: Human Revolution makes use of it wonderfully by showing pretty much every inventory item right at your fingertips and with the eye of your crosshair.
With an beautiful storyline and various puzzles that you can solve for, coupled with added RPG elements, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a wonderful experience on the Wii U.
The term Metroidvania means a whole lot to gamers nowadays. When Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was released, it revolutionized the action-RPG genre as a whole and spawned countless spinoffs leading to the creation of an entirely new genre of video games. Axiom Verge was developed by Tom Happ, yes one person did everything from the sound, graphics, level design and gameplay. Pretty remarkable if you ask us.
Axiom Verge will put you into the perspective of a solid Metroid experience. Tunneling through each nook and cranny to find the hidden powerups that gave us flashbacks of the NES and SNES days. You owe it to yourself if you love the Metroid franchise to play Axiom Verge. Considering the fantastic action experience that Axiom Verge brings to the table, it's no wonder it made the cut of best Wii U games.
Skylanders SWAP Force
We actually didn't like the Skylanders games that required you to progress by buying additional action figures sold separately at big box stores or online. SWAP Force changes that element, so whether you have hundreds of figures or simply just the three that come with the pack in you're good to go.
SWAP Force takes all of the elements that made the previous series great and adds to them, leaving the player with a fantastic improvement over the original series. You can now swap in and out of characters as an added element. Coupled with a great soundtrack and flashy level design, Skylanders SWAP Force makes for an unprecedented experience on the Wii U.
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
Guacamelee gets its own identity when it comes to the MetroidVania genre. The Lucha libre duo allows for a coop experience with a buddy. The gameplay is king and the humor is fantastic and is so witty at times. The beautiful graphics, extremely over the top characters and excellent soundtrack. The fluid animation and bright color palettes give you an experience worth playing through.
The gameplay is clearly heavily inspired from the likes of Castlevania and Metroid. The combo based combat might feel a little stiff at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll discover the surprisingly deep combo system. The dead and living world is very reminiscent of The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past and we really enjoyed playing through Guacamelee.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
We were almost turned off when and HD remake of one of the best Zelda games of all time was released in The Wind Waker HD but then we realized that we get to experience a fantastic game in HD. Everything seemed better on the Wii U release, the colors were brighter, the boss battles felt larger and the overworld felt massive.
We absolutely enjoyed playing through one of the best Gamecube games on the console. That same charm when going through dungeon to dungeon picking up items to complete each dungeon. The same lock on system is there that you have grown to love. The second screen lets you swap inventory items without needing to pause the game.
There's also a hero mode that doubles enemy damage and health can only be regained by drinking potions. An added experience for those looking for a brighter challenge. With the use of swift sailing, you can now cut the time in half on each sail, something that plagued the Gamecube release.
We were absolutely blown away by the fluid gameplay and wonderfully driven storyline of Bayonetta 2. So much so that we consider it to be the best action game of all time, yes even more so than favorites such as God of War, Devil May Cry and many others.
The action constantly feels fresh in Bayonetta 2. All of the enemies have different attacks and reward you for paying attention and timing the attacks, rather than just mashing buttons in order to string combos together. Each of the bosses are unique and give you a visual style like no other action game. Bayonetta 2 feels so polished and plays extremely well, building on what made the original game in the franchise great and is a great experience on the Wii U.
Rayman Legends makes me sometimes forget we're playing through a platformer and sometimes makes you feel like you're making your way through a movie. The beautify graphics and color style. We loved how when you unlock the five worlds, it unravels a fantastic coop multiplayer experience right before your eyes.
Rayman starts off just by running and jumping your way through the levels, but eventually ramps up and gets more unique along the way. From the beautiful transitions in the boss battles and enemies. We love the visual aspects that allow you to unlock new areas right before your eyes. Rayman will keep you entertained from beginning until end and is often considered one of the best platformers of all time.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
What would the Wii U be without their own release of the ever popular Smash Bros franchise starring your favorite Nintendo characters like Donkey Kong, Kirby, Mario, Samus and many others. With up to 8 players simultaneously, it's incredibly balanced and makes incredible uses of any controller you wish. A Gamecube adapter was also released to use your original controllers on the Wii U or on PC.
The levels are fantastic and so over the top, like the F-Zero stage or Zelda stage. The hand to hand combat is incredibly tense when playing through up to 8 players at one time. We never liked the items being used in the game as we fill it makes the gameplay too random. Luckily you could turn this off to head back to the precise fighting game that we've grown to love in the Smash Bros franchise.
Super Mario 3D World
With the unique gameplay twists like jumping to flip panels, creating your own paths, or letting the music guide you along your way. The gameplay in Super Mario 3D world gives you a great gameplay experience that is such a fresh experience.
The use of the cat suit adds for an interesting experience that was such a joy to play as whether your diving around, scrapping away at enemies. Each boss battles feel like a larger than life experience that are so unique and are a blast to play through. Super Mario 3d World is a must play for platformers and is such a joy to play today.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
What happens when you take everything you've grown to know and love from the Zelda franchises dating back from the NES, Super NES, N64, Gamecube and Wii and throw it out the window? You get one of the best open world action-RPG of all time. It's a shame that this was released at the tail end of the Wii U's lifespan as it's such a fantastic game. Luckily it's been brought over to the Switch as a killer app for the console.
Whether your exploring new areas that you might not be strong enough to conquer or finding different types of items in order to craft your way to new items. Breath of the Wild makes use of weapons that now can break, a shocking gameplay mechanic never found before in a Zelda game for your main weapon. It gives you the vibe of more hardcore action-RPG games such as The Witcher 3 and we loved every minute of it.
We hope you enjoyed our listing of the best Wii U games of all time. If you feel like something should have made the list or liked what was brought to the table, feel free to reach out to us on Twitter!
